Hold 'em takes hold

Big money available by winning at poker's hot game, in Tucson and Las Vegas alike

Bryan Sharp stared down at the wad of bills in his hand. He had just won $1,487 for placing third in a poker tournament at Desert Diamond Casino. It was more money than the 22-year-old UA student had ever held in his life. Instead of daydreaming about what to buy with his newfound riches, though, Sharp knew what he had to do next.

"I've got organic chemistry homework," Sharp said, scratching the considerable stubble on his face that had grown during the more than 6 1/2 hours he spent hunched over a felt-covered table. "I've got to drive 45 minutes to go and do that, then go to bed."

Sharp found himself on South Nogales Highway after 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 31 as the result of his fondness for Texas Hold 'em, a card game that has gained massive popularity and helped chase poker out of the back room and into the spotlight.

"It was the amount of cash that people were playing for that drew me in," says Sharp, a senior majoring in biology who took up the game six months ago after watching ESPN's coverage of the World Series of Poker, a series of more than 40 tournaments played annually in Las Vegas.
