State puts hold 'em on poker

Petro's office filed a lawsuit in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court to stop Reece's Las Vegas Supplies from conducting more "Texas Hold'em" poker tournaments and to recover hundreds of thousands of dollars that the attorney general accuses Reece's owners of skimming from charities over two years.
The court issued a temporary restraining order Wednesday to stop a poker tournament Reece's had scheduled for this weekend at the Dayton Convention Center on behalf of the Wayne Football Alumni Club.
Reece's is owned by Reece and Janice Powers of Harrison Twp. Reece Powers, 65, was sentenced in 2003 to 33 months in prison for running gambling businesses. Also named in the lawsuit is Dale Rockwell of Beavercreek, an officer of the company. Phone calls to all three were not returned Wednesday.
Ohio law says that all proceeds from gambling, except those used to pay for prizes, must go to the sponsoring charity.
Petro's lawsuit alleges that Reece's owners diverted hundreds of thousands of dollars into their own pockets. In addition, dealers and pit bosses at the games were each paid $80 per tournament day, according to an affidavit filed by investigators.
