Texas Hold 'Em fans aren't folding

By MIKE SAEWITZ

SARASOTA — The Texas Hold ‘Em e-mail ambush began on March 8, and it’s still not over.

The e-mails have overwhelmed city and county leaders’ inboxes with hundreds of pleas to allow a poker room at the Sarasota Kennel Club, an idea that the local governments shot down two years ago.

There have been so many e-mails about the issue that city staffers created a special spam filter to weed them out. But by the time the filter was working, city and county leaders had succumbed, and are now reconsidering the Kennel Club’s request.

“The popularity of poker is 10-fold what it was then,” said Jack Collins Jr., the vice president of the kennel club. “It’s hard to argue with the popularity of Texas Hold ‘Em.”

Collins figured that visitors to the Kennel Club’s web site would be willing to put their names on a pre-written letter that’s sent to city and county commissioners with a few clicks of the mouse. He estimates that about 500 messages have been sent.

Meanwhile, Collins said he hears from poker fans about a dozen times a day.

“Are we gonna get that poker?” Manatee County retiree Michael Pannarale asked Collins Friday on his way out of the Miss Whirl Club, a kennel club restaurant.

“We better get that poker,” Pannarale said. “It’s the only track in the country that doesn’t have it. It’s ridiculous.”
