Texas Hold’em tournaments for money? Well, you bet!
Shuffle up and deal. Real-money poker tournaments start tonight in Brandon, and they’re fully legal.
The Army, Navy and Air Force Club has been granted a temporary licence to run Wednesday-night Texas Hold’em tournaments under a provincial pilot project.
The Manitoba Gaming Control Commission (MGCC) will also allow several other charitable organizations to run similar games, including the Minnedosa Golf Club, which will hold a poker tournament on Saturday.
MGCC spokesperson Andrea Kowal said two other charities in Brandon may also be granted temporary licences in the near future. As many as 21 charitable organizations across the province may receive licences to run poker tournaments during the trial project, which runs until the end of May.
The charities can decide on their own tournament rules, Kowal said, but the rules must be approved by the MGCC.
The tournaments at the Army, Navy and Air Force Club will feature relatively high stakes. Players must buy-in for $60 and there is an optional rebuy of $40.
Up to 100 players can participate. If the tournament is full, the top nine players will win money.
According to MGCC rules, the total payout can be no more that 60 per cent of the revenues. That means the maximum prize pool at the tournaments will be $6,000.
Tournament organizer Harvey Hjorth said the first place prize could be as much as $2,400.
Hjorth expects serious players to come out for the large cash prizes and said the games will likely have a different atmosphere than the free Texas Hold’em tournaments hosted at bars and restaurants in Brandon.
“(Free tournaments) don’t give you a true sense of tournament Texas Hold’em play, in that people are very cavalier with their betting,” Hjorth said.
The Minnedosa Golf Club will host just one poker tournament this Saturday. That one features a single buy-in of $75 and no rebuys.
