Texas Hold’em tournaments for money? Well, you bet!

Organizer Chris Worley said the tournament is already full.

“We opened it to the first 49 paid players, and it sold out in about six days,” he said yesterday.

Provincial officials will keep a close eye on how the tournaments unfold. If all goes well, Kowal said poker may be added to the list of charitable games regularly licensed by the province.

The MGCC currently licenses charitable bingos, break-open tickets, raffles and other games, but not poker.

Some bars and restaurants in Manitoba have also been running free poker tournaments that occupy a legal grey area. At Houstons Country Roadhouse in Brandon, for example, players compete with play money for low-value prizes like T-shirts and poker chip sets.

The MGCC doesn’t precisely define what makes a poker game legal or illegal, but Kowal said if a business hosts a tournament with an entry fee or cover charge, or if the players bet with real money, or if there are prizes of significant value, then the games are likely against the law.

A Winnipeg nightclub was forced to shut down its weekly poker tournaments earlier this year because it offered a major prize — an entry into the World Series of Poker valued at more than $10,000.

Kowal said the trial poker project will not change the rules governing those types of free tournaments. Charities may choose to use bars or restaurants as the venue for their tournaments, however.

“It may allow for a chance for charities to partner with some of these locations,” Kowal said.

She added that the MGCC will study the results of the trial project over the summer and will likely recommend whether or not to continue licencing charity poker games later in the year.
